Should you be Using Freeagent?

Often when a company recommends a product or service, you’ll find yourself asking - what’s in it for them? In this case the answer is better service at an excellent better price.

Now, you know that we love Xero; it’s incredibly well-featured and constantly evolving to meet the demands of small to medium enterprises but it’s not always the most appropriate option for some companies.

We’ve been working with Freeagent for some time now, and have noted a steady improvement in features and function, and for some of our clients it may be a better option than an all-singing, all-dancing alternative.

What is Freeagent?

Freeagent is a complete accounting package geared towards smaller businesses. You’ll find a high-level summary here but the specific benefits for our clients are listed below:

  • If you have a Natwest or RBS business account it is free to use which includes running a payroll.

  • If you don't have a bank account with RBS or Natwest - then it is £33 excluding VAT and we offer a 25% discount. This is lower than the £40 excluding VAT that Xero charges which doesn't include payroll.

  • Sole traders are £19 per month less discount.

  • Landlords (sole trader) are £10 less discount.

  • MTD compliant.

  • In South Africa (international subscription) it is $22 a month and we give 20% discount.

It helps you with your bookkeeping, it can track your expenses, it has a really neat and easy-to-use phone app and it’s constantly improving.

If we had one area where we felt things could be better, it’s in the reporting from the app, however this has improved considerably recently and we are speaking to Freeagent directly to make this even better.

Freeagent themselves offer some suggestions as to why their product is so advantageous for small businesses:

A nice consideration is that it is an Edinburgh-based software company and you can pop along to Fountainbridge if you need support (assuming of course that you live in Edinburgh, or are looking for an excuse to visit)!

If the bigger, more complex accounting packages are simply not appropriate to you, give Freeagent a try. We can offer significant discounts on an already-competitive price and you’ll benefit from better, and easier, financial management of your business.
